Overview:
This Montezuma's Revenge is very similar to the old Colecovision version except that it looks very different (making it a bit easier to identify things). Also the controls in this one (particularly jumping) are much smoother and easier to control. In the Colecovision one you tend to fly about wildly, but not so much in this one. While at first you may think this one is exactly the same as the Colecovision version, keep playing and you'll find that it is a bit different!
The graphics are really pretty good for a Sega Master System Game. There isn't any music (except when you pick something up) and the noises amount to static mostly. All in all it's a pretty cool puzzle/maze game that is very challenging.
Directions:
Note: At the beginning of the game it tells you to Press Start to choose a level. Press A instead, Start doesn't work. Also, you can pause the beginning screens (title screen and scene where Joe is walking up the stairs) if you press Start there, so if you aren't able to begin the game that could be why. Press A or B to start the game (won't work if you've got it paused). Climb down the rope below your feet to get started after you have chosen your level!
In Montezuma's Revenge you will have to deal with flames occasionally. It's pretty obvious where they are, and one touch will burn you up! Other pieces of the stages you should be aware of include conveyor belts (these are brilliant orange, roughly conveyor belt shaped, and will carry you in whatever direction they are turning), ladders, ropes (grey stringy things with triangles at the top), and force fields. Force fields come in two forms. Both are blue, but the kind that looks like chain links, is positioned vertically, and flashes will kill you if you touch it. You must run past these when they vanish without getting caught when they reappear. The other kind has a sparkling yellow and orange center and is positioned horizontally. This one flashes on and off as well, but will not hurt you. If you are standing on it when it vanishes you will fall (likely to your death). Additionally, you can jump up through conveyor belts, horizontal force fields, and bricks to get to a level above you if it is low enough. In one room in particular you will have to keep this in mind in order to get anywhere if you are at the bottom.
Any jewels, jewelry, or treasure you pick up will be worth 1,000 points each. Any other item besides treasures will be kept at the top left corner of the screen until you use it. Unlike the Coleco version, in this one you can easily fill up this space. You won't be able to pick up anything new if this space is full, including treasures which aren't even stored there! In this version, instead of hammers you have scepters that are small and green, red, and yellow with twisty handles. Scepters still enable you to walk past monsters as the hammers did in the Coleco version, but in this one you must activate a scepter after you have picked it up by pressing B. This way you can save it until you want to use it! Scepters are worth 100 points. Swords are worth 50 points and will kill either the next spider or skull you touch. Spiders are worth 3,000 points and skulls are worth 2,000. 10,000 points gains you an extra life! |
