Overview:
Spy vs. Spy is a clever and original concept for a video game if there ever was one. Best played with a human opponent, this game features the Mad Magazine characters Black spy and White spy trying to outwit one another on a quest of patriotic espionage and personal gain. Regardless of who your opponent is (computer or human), two separate playing boards are displayed on the screen. You always have the luxury to observe what your opponent is doing.
You are also afforded an array of booby traps to thwart your opponent from obtaining the four items that allow you to win the round or match. Also, every booby trap may be disarmed by choosing the correct countermeasure/tool provided in the game. Whenever you and your opponent occupy the same room, you fight to the "death" until one leaves the room. Should you or your opponent be "killed" by the other, an angelic form flies upwards and allots time to the survivor to find one or more of the four objectives to win the game.
Gameplay is very good and controls respond well. The musical score that accompanies the game presents the era well, and the other sound effects represent each individual trap's caustic effect.
Spy vs. Spy is a unique and interesting game. As I mentioned before, it is best to play against a human opponent, at least in the sake of treachery, with all the traps and such. Now then, God save the... Who's side are we on??
Directions:
Move your Austin Powers wannabe (who wouldn't want to be Austin?!?!) around the playing board. Search furniture and paintings in different rooms to find the key, documents, the package and flight badge. You will also need the briefcase to carry all four items at once.
You can also booby trap the furniture and unopened doors with time bombs, hi-tension springs, paint cans or trip wire activated guns. Each trap has its own method of disarmament. There is an umbrella in a coat rack you can use to walk through a door with a paint can on top. There are a pair of scissors in the medical box to disarm the gun. A pair of pliers in the white tool box on the wall will cut the spring. The time bomb cannot be undone and you must simply avoid it until it explodes.
Once you gather the four objectives in the briefcase, find the door to the airport (it has a black plane and a white plane on it) and you win the round. |
