Space Invaders

Space Invaders (Super Nintendo)
Taito and Nintendo have brought back the classic Space Invaders game, with very little modification. An incredibly popular game when it was first released, Space Invaders has inspired many reproductions over the years, although this type of game has been eclipsed by modern graphics-heavy, music-laden games.

In any case, the subtitle, "The Original Game," is pretty much the truth. The graphics are almost identical to the original Atari release. There is almost no animation, things just move back and forth on the screen. There is no background music, also true to the original, but the original sound effects are there, and still amazingly good for such a simple game.

The main difference is that this new edition has a competitive two-player mode. Not only can you take turns and compete for points, but you can face-off in a side-by-side split screen contest, in the tradition of Tetris and Dr. Mario.

If you like a game of survival and high scores, and if you like direct competition outside of the fighting game genre, then give Space Invaders a try. You'll love it!

Each time you turn on SPACE INVADERS you will be at war with enemies from space who are threatening the earth. Your objective is to destroy these invaders by firing your "laser cannon." You must wipe out the invaders either before they reach the earth (bottom of the screen), or before they hit you three times with their "laser bombs."
--From the Atari 2600 Space Invaders instruction manual.

I know, it's not exactly the greatest story ever told. And the best part is, you don't even get to save the day in the end. They just keep sending wave after wave, until they finally get you.

One of the true classics of video gaming, and possibly the first coin-op video game ever to be ported to a home system. Space Invaders spawned countless sequels and knock-offs due to its insane popularity both at the arcade and in the home.

The aliens are coming! The aliens are coming!

This Game Boy game is a remake of the classic arcade game Space Invaders. There are three different types of invading alien ships. There is the red invader who shoots fireballs, the green invader who shoots lightning, and the blue alien who shoots normal blaster rays. This game has nice sharp sound and very good GBC style graphics. A must play for fans of the original Space Invaders.

The classic arcade hit, remade for the... 90's. Still a very simple idea, but this edition features animated sprites rather than just moving back and forth. The background music is modern and fast, designed to make the game feel even more exiting than it actually is.

The biggest change with this version is that the UFO drops power-ups instead of just being worth extra points. Unfortunately, there seems to be no two-player mode, so although the High Score is still the Holy Grail of arcade games, you can't compete directly with your friends.
