Xtreme Classix - Contra

Contra
Contra is one of the best action series ever made. This series has had a following since I was a young child, and they are still making Contra games today. The reason for this is most likely the games' ability to be played at any time, day or night, and relieve stress through blowing stuff up and killing tons of evil creatures. Contra is the first game that comes to mind when I want to really tear up some bad dudes. So let loose the stress of the day and give one of these Contra games a try.

ONLY THE STRONG SURVIVE

In 1957 a large object from outer space crashed into Earth's Amazon basin, near ruins of the lost Mayan civilization. Scientists world-wide heralded the incident as a trivial cosmic occurrence, and thus the collision was soon forgotten.

Now, thirty years later, rumors of an evil force have swept into the Pentagon's front office, and tales from frightened villagers of a hideous being with an army of alien henchmen are sending chills down the spines of top military brass.

Unwilling to upset current political stability, an all-out assault on the region has been overruled, and instead, two of America's most cunning, courageous and ruthless soldiers from the Special Forces elite commando squad have been selected to seek out and destroy these alien intruders.

Congratulations, pal, you're one of the chosen. But before you take pride in being the best, be warned.

You're about to come face to face against Red Falcon, the cruelest life-form in the galaxy. He arrived on Earth thirty years ago (that's six months time in an alien's life) to establish a foothold from which he will attempt to conquer our world and then use it as a stepping stone toward his ultimate fiendish goal: domination of the entire universe.

Needless to say, playing hero won't be easy. But you have no choice -- you must be a hero. Because if you fail, life as we know it will cease to exist, and the vile Red Falcon will rule forever.

If you succeed, well...it doesn't matter, because I doubt you will.

Contra, the start of a very long and great series. Contra is the kinda game you can sink your teeth into. Guns, explosions, aliens, and most importantly, lots of killing. That's what a true game should consist of, and that's what Contra is all about. The graphics were great, which is something you can always expect from Konami. The music is catchy and the sounds are realistic, except for the sound it makes when you die. This is a great game for you and a bud, or just save the world by yourself. So have some fun, kill some aliens, thanks to Contra.

Contra Hard Corps Sega Genesis Screenshot 1
Contra Hard Corps (Sega Genesis)
Five years had passed since the Alien Wars, and mankind was slowly beginning to recover. Nevertheless, civilization was still in turmoil. The extreme concentration of people and goods in the few areas that escaped devastation during the fighting had turned the cities into hotbeds of crime.

Worse, the rapid development of genetic engineering and cyborg technologies during the war had spawned a new, fearsome type of crime unimaginable before the conflict.

To combat this threat, the government set up a special team of elite troops, the "Unified Military Special Mobile Task Force." Taking the name of the heroes who had saved the planet during the Alien Wars, the public called them the "Hard Corps."

It's the Holiday Season. The chaotic city festively decorated, its citizens looked for a respite from the usual hustle and bustle. But unknown to the populace, the forces of evil were using this otherwise peaceful moment to advance their dark plans.

Someone infiltrates the city's defense computer complex and unmanned weapons begin to run amuck on the streets, attacking people at random. receiving orders to destroy these rampaging machines, the Hard Corps heads out. But this was to prove to be only the opening chapter in their fight against an enormous conspiracy of evil.

WARNING: This game is very difficult. Serious players, proceed at your own risk!

Take control of one of four unique characters and gun everything in sight! Collect up to four new weapons and a bomb and figure out the right weapon for the right situation. Choose your path wisely as there are five different endings.

Contra Operation C Gameboy Screenshot 1
Contra Operation C (Gameboy)
As Scorpion, guerrilla commando extraordinaire, you have to blast your way past jungle snipers, naval attack submarines, death-dealing androids and vicious genetic warriors. And that's the easy part. At the end of each level, Scorpion finds a terrifying boss character ready to tear him into "Contra" confetti.
--From the Gameboy Contra Operation C instruction manual.

Operation C was based on the NES Game Super C. This was a fairly cool addition to the contra series. It added some new weapons and also had some top view levels. The graphics are OK and the sound is not that great but still a nice little game. The controls are a bit flakey but not too bad. I would say for a GB game they did a fine job. So what are you waiting for, press the Play It Now button and try Operation C.

Sipping cold lemonade with a couple of native lovelies, Mad Dog and Scorpion (Guerrilla Warriors Extraordinaire) relax on a Rio beach and boast of how they destroyed the vile alien war monger, Red Falcon. Little do they know that Red Falcon didn't flee with his pointed tail between his legs. Instead, he tactically retreated to round-up ruffians of the universe, friends from all walks of war, to mount a second assault on planet Earth.

One of these new recruits is Jagger Froid, a demented alien from the Black Hole Galaxy, who dishes out punishment with a laser sharp tongue. Red Falcon has also shuttled in The Babalu Bestructoid Mechanism, a giant alien attack tank, which was the primary weapon used to disintegrate the innocent solar system of Tralala.

But the genius behind the Red Falcon's Earth conquering concept is his plan to have thousands of intergalactic warriors seep into the the brains of the U.S. Army. It's a mind contamination trick which has already taken command of U.S. Forces at Fort Fire Storm.

How do we know that all our soldiers have been brain trashed? You can see it in their eyes.

Now, if Mad Dog and Scorpion fail to recuperate from their months on the beach in time to destroy Red Falcon's G.I. fortified Hate Nest, his sinister scheme will permeate the world's mightiest power (nuclear missile silos included).

And if that happens, we'll all be pushing up daisies.
--From the NES Contra Super C instruction manual.

Super C, the sequel to the very well known NES game Contra, was a decent addition to the series. Played much like its predecessor, this installment of the series had no new weapons or features other than the addition of a few top view levels. So Contra and Super C are almost identical in the realms of game-play, controls, graphics, and sound. If you have played one of them you pretty much have played both. Not to say Super C was bad, but not a giant leap from the original. With that said, have fun and good luck with Super C.

Contra: The Alien Wars was based on the SNES Game Contra 3. The Alien Wars was a fun game all around. You did not have near the options you did with the SNES, but for a hand held it did fairly well. The graphics are kind of a let down and the sound could be a little better, but it's not bad. The premise is the same as the SNES version, the same storyline is used for both. Other than that it is your basic Contra game, kill or be killed. So good luck and have fun playing Contra: The Alien Wars.
