Batman
The Dark Knight. The Caped Crusader. Proof that you don't need super-powers to be a super-hero. Just super-money. So many cool gadgets. And let's be honest, the bad guys are the real reason we love this series. Joker. Riddler. Two Face. Even the Penguin. And let's not forget Catwoman and Poison Ivy.

Mr. Freeze is going to turn Gotham into an Ice Age! Gotham's heroes, Batman and Robin, must go and stop Freeze before he makes the city a giant iceberg!

Adventures of Batman and Robin had great graphics and responsive, easy-to-use controls. The two player mode was a great feature as well. The gameplay is what it was lacking. It did bring some big hitters to the villain's table: The Joker, Mad Hatter, Two-Face, and Mr. Freeze. The backgrounds are very creative with nice little detailed graphic touches like, cats popping out of the trashcans when destroyed, and you can knock certain badguy's hats off. The Mad Hatter's level was especially cool, looking like a scene from Wonderland. A great musical score fills the background music. Overall it is a good game, it just needed a little more involvement from the player.

It seems that the dynamic duo have some work ahead of them. When the world's worst Super-Villains are running loose in Gotham, it's up to the Dark Knight and the Boy Wonder to stop them. Batman and Robin have to run into the fray to put a stop to their evil plans. So start playing and save the day, on the same Bat-site, same Bat-console.

Adventures of Batman and Robin is a delightful game with wonderful graphics and awesome sound. The graphics have an animated theme that stays true to the cartoon that the game is based off of, right down to the look of the city in the background. The music is right on with the theme and holds true to TV series as well. All in all this is a fun and entertaining game, and any fan of the Batman series or the beat-em-up genre should give it a try. So good luck, and enjoy!

The Joker's Game
"How do I get rid of Batman, his right-hand man Robin, AND have a little fun?" thought The Joker.

His answer to that private question was to preside over a competition, with Gotham City's major crime bosses as the contestants.

The rules?... Simple. The first one to knock off Batman wins!

But you need a fox to have a fox hunt. The Joker needed a way to ensure Batman's cooperation.

So now Robin is the bait. As The Joker's hostage, he is imprisoned somewhere in Gotham City. Batman is prowling the city, searching for his missing partner.

Meanwhile, a Who's Whop of hooligans is hot on Batman's trail. The Mad Hatter, Mr. Freeze and The Scarecrow have mobilized an army of mechanical bad guys. The brass knuckles are polished, machine guns loaded, hand grenade pins pulled.

The Joker is a happy man...

The citizens of GOTHAM CITY are busy planning the city's 200th Anniversary Festival, but there is not much to celebrate. Crime and violence rule the city.

The only man who can free the city from THE JOKER'S evil clutches is the one and only - BATMAN!

With your help, the CAPED CRUSADER can defeat THE JOKER and save the good people of GOTHAM CITY. BATMAN is armed with special weapons and acrobatic strength. He must destroy 15 different types of enemies and 5 bosses, while traveling through 5 stages.

Finally, BATMAN comes face-to-face with THE JOKER! But who will prevail? It's up to you!
--From the NES Batman instruction manual.

Batman is based loosely on the Michael Keaton/Jack Nicholson movie. Batman is out to stop the Joker from terrorizing Gotham City. There are some cinema scenes between levels, that show the Batmobile driving around or confrontations with the Joker. The cut-scenes have nice graphics to look at. The in-game graphics are good, too.

There are some quotes from the movie included, and much of the scenery came right from the movie, too, such as the Axis Chemical Plant, and Batman's final showdown against the Joker in the clock tower. The sounds were also reminiscent of the movie.

The controls were a little tricky at first, but easy to use once you get used to them. The ability to make Batman jump off the walls was a really fun feature. This platformer based on the movie was definitely an exception to the rule that all games based on movies are crappy.

Now, this game I absolutely enjoyed. The graphics are dark and mysterious. The sounds are good and the music varies from level to level. The game-play is also very enjoyable, having a good few modes to choose from. I recommend this game for any fans of the movie or Batman in general.

Batman Returns NES Screenshot 1
Batman Returns (NES)
THE FESTIVITIES BEGIN...

At one time Gotham City lay covered with a shroud of fear. Grime filed every nook and cranny of the city as gang bosses grew fat and powerful. The ultimate leader was The Joker. The green-haired madman with the killer smile took over as no Mafia don ever had. Nothing stood between him and total control over Gotham City - except Batman.

The arrival of the Batman sparked a renaissance in Gotham City. As the citizens reclaimed the city, the Dark Knight served as her ever-vigilant protector.

Now, the city is preparing to celebrate the Christmas holiday. The annual tree lighting ceremony is set to take place in Gotham Plaza, with the lovely Ice Princess prepared to flip the switch after the Mayor gives his traditional speech.

The Mayor wants to keep the tone positive. He knows Gotham City is in unrest lately. There have been a constant stream of reports filtering in from Police Commissioner Gordon's office of high crime in the inner city.

The Mayor invites Max Shreck - one of the city's leading citizens - to say a few words to the crowd. As he does, there is a rumble of commotion from the rear of the crowd. A giant gift-wrapped box rolls into the plaza. Suddenly the Red Triangle Circus Gang erupts from the package. They begin terrorizing the citizens, spreading panic and fear. Reacting quickly, Gordon radios instructions to his headquarters: "What are you waiting for? Send the Bat-Signal!"

The signal reflects off the cloudy skies over Gotham City and is caught by sensors mounted atop Wayne Manor, located outside the city. These sensors turn special mirrors which bounce the signal into the study of young millionaire, Bruce Wayne. He rises, facing the window. Cast in the glow of the reflected Bat-Signal, Wayne's brow furrows. He steps aside into the darkness, and heads for the Batcave...
--From the NES Batman Returns instruction manual.

Batman Returns is a platformer with plenty to offer. It has well-drawn backgrounds, and the animation of the sprites is quite accurate. The music was catchy and the sound effects helped the action along. Gameplay was easy to pick up and learn, and it was fun. The controls were pretty easy, with using your secondary weapon as the only tricky part. All you have to is press select and choose which one you want, and then press up and attack at the same time.

The ability to use the grappling hook was really fun feature. The storyline was also good. It sounded like a typical story right out of one of the comics books. This game is a very nice addition to the Batman series.

HAVOC IN GOTHAM PLAZA

Gotham City is in the midst of a jubilant holiday celebration. The mayor is giving his annual speech before the lighting of the Christmas tree in Gotham Plaza, when, much to the surprise of the crowd, a huge gift box appears at the back of the plaza. As the crowd quiets, the box erupts with the roar of powerful engines. Skull-masked motorcyclists, flame-breathing clowns and knife wielding acrobats storm the crowd, striking terror where moments before there had been glee.

Police Commissioner Gordon, on hand for the celebration, quickly sends word to the precinct headquarters: "Send the signal! We need Batman here quickly."

Miles away, in stately Wayne Manor, millionaire bachelor Bruce Wayne looks up from his desk. A series of mechanised mirrors has detected the Bat-Signal and reflected it through a window in Wayne's study. At that moment, his faithful butler Alfred enters the room. "Sir, shall I prepare?" Alfred asks. He knows the answer already, for his employer has never refused a call.

"Yes, Alfred." Wayne's brow furrows as he heads toward a large aquarium in the center of the room. "Any idea what's happening?" He rolls up his sleeve, plunges his arm into the fish tank and presses a button on an ornamental castle. Behind him a secret panel opens to reveal a passage.

Alfred follows him through the door. They walk through the passageway leading to the hidden Batcave. "There is some commotion at the Plaza, Sir," Alfred responds.

Once inside the Batcave, Alfred takes a seat at a bank of computer terminals. Bruce Wayne activates a console panel beside a large vault door. In a few seconds the vault opens. Inside are a number of armoured Batman suits and a vast array of high-tech weapons. He scans the suits. "What's the situation, Alfred?" he calls out.

At the monitors, Alfred has intercepted a local satellite feed of a newscast. He sees the thugs wreaking havoc on the citizens. "Approximately twenty strong. Wearing what appears to be circus costumes - no sign of armour. Weapons noted include knives, flame throwers, possibly small arms. Most on foot, some motorcycles."

"Thanks. Link with the Batmobile and keep me apprised of the situation." He dons a suit of light armour with good flexibility. "I'll go in at ground level from the east of the plaza. If you see anything to dictate otherwise, let me know".

As Bruce pulls on the rubber cowl of his suit, Alfred hits a remote control button which starts the engine on the Batmobile. A moment later, Batman leaps into the cockpit and speeds away to rescue Gotham City once again!

Batman Returns Sega Master System Screenshot 1
Batman Returns (Sega Master System)
Batman Returns is an adventure game where you take on the role of the Dark Knight, trying to stop the evil that has befallen Gotham City. Based on the timeless comic and Tim Burton movie, you must stop the Penguin and Catwoman from taking over Gotham. You also must contend with the ever-present members of the Red Triangle Circus Gang, which is in league with two of Batman's arch-enemies.

I found Batman Returns to be quite difficult. As the game begins, you are presented with a choice of two ways to go. Route 1 is the easiest path on the first stage, and later ones as well. Route 2 seems to always have nearly impossible challenges for Batman's acrobatic skills.

Graphics are good for a game of this one's age. Detail is well done for 8-bit graphics, and the game is quite colorful. A musical score accompanies your adventure, and other sounds include explosions and a chime when a opponent is defeated. Gameplay is smooth and control response is good.

All in all, Batman Returns is a pretty good game. It is somewhat difficult, but you find extra lives in abundance, so I guess that balances things out a bit.
