Xtreme Classix - Battletoads

Battletoads
The Battletoads have become favorite characters for many gamers, partly due to the inexplicable popularity of anthropomorphic amphibians in general (e.g. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), but probably more due to their cartoonish ability to enlarge their limbs when striking opponents a critical blow. Also, you can't deny the schmooze factor of hanging out with the Double Dragon team. Featuring games on Nintendo Entertainment System, Super Nintendo, Game Boy Color, Sega Genesis and GameGear, Battletoads is a great series. Check them all out!

"TOADNAPPED!

While partying on Lost Vega, a deep-space leisure station, the three Battletoads - Zitz, Rash and Pimple, get pleasantly side-tracked by a Thallian Thorax Dancer. Unfortunately, the dancer isn't what she appears to be - and soon reveals herself as the evil Dark Queen!
The 'toads fight valiantly against overwhelming odds, but are eventually overpowered. Yet, all is not lost! Although Rash and Pimple are taken prisoner, Zitz makes it to the Toadster and burns space back to the Vulture and Professor T. Bird, the Battletoads' mentor. Rash and Pimple are taken away in the Gargantua to the planet Armagedda, but luckily Zitz and the Professor are hot on their trail... So, there's the situation, Zitz: the Dark Queen's 'toadnapped your best buddies - what're ya gonna do about it? You're gonna get real MAD, that's what you're gonna do - and then you're gonna get EVEN!
Professor Bird's gonna set you down on Armagedda, but from then on it's up to you. You've got a long way to go, Zitz - into caverns, across swamps and even through the belly of the dreaded Wurm. And ultimately, of course, you're gonna have to defeat the terrible, the towering, the truly 'toadsplatting Robo-Manus mutant! Have you got what it takes to be a bona-fide Battletoad? We'll soon see, one way or another..."

Battletoads is a pretty fun arcade style beat-em-up game. The music was always very cool. The coolest thing about the graphics in Battletoads game, and its number one claim to fame, is the addition of huge body parts at the end of certain combos. The very last hit of almost all of the combos resulted in your fist or foot growing very large and then hitting your enemy with it. This was actually a huge craze at the time. The backgrounds looked good as well.

The controls were easy to learn and responsive. The gameplay is good side-scrolling fun. In one stage you get to ride a jet-ski and in another you get to fly a plane. If you like beat'em up games, give this one a try, it's a lot of fun.

Battletoads was one of my favorite games as a kid. It's a classic side scroller beat'em-up game with a couple of cool graphic twists. For instance, usually at the end of a combo, your fist or foot will get really big and deliver a devastating blow. You also have the ability to pick up weapons your opponents may drop, kinda like Double Dragon.

The graphics had bright colors and were well drawn. The music was a little aggravating, but the sound effects were great. The gameplay was good because it mixed things up. Some levels were played like a beat'em-up, some were racing, and a couple were like a platformer. The controls were easy to learn, and they reacted well.

The story is pretty unoriginal. A kidnapped princess is the most regurgitated storyline in the video game business. Battletoads is a lot of fun to play though, I suggest trying it at least once.

Okay 'toads! Let's get EVEN!

When the evil Dark Queen kidnaps both your best buddy and the best looking girl this side of the Mazallion Star Cluster - what are you gonna do about it? Are you gonna cry? Hide? Call the Starcops? No way! Because you're a BATTLETOAD and BATTLETOADS don't cry, hide or call for help. BATTLETOADS get real MAD - and then they get EVEN!

So, strap on your Blaster, power-up the Toadster, and get on down to the Dark Queen's planet - but, watch out 'toad - this lady's bad, and she's got a whole mess of really nasty surprises lined up for you - like the Psyko Pigs, the Mutant Ratpack, Robo-Manus and the Saturn Toadtrap, to name but a few. You're gonna need all your fighting skills to defeat her - the Battletoad Butt, the Big Bad Boot and the Nuclear Knuckles. Hey, and don't forget to take along the Jet Turbo, the Space Board and the Speed Bike. Because you're gonna need 'em all, 'toad, if you're gonna rescue your friends and get the frog outa there with green skin intact!

So let's get bad and crazy! Let's get mad, 'toad! And then get EVEN!

Battletoads Double Dragon (Super Nintendo)
Following her crushing defeat at the hands of the Battletoads on Ragnarok's World, the humiliated Dark Queen hightailed it to the outer reaches of the Universe.
Months have passed...and the Queen's parting threat of revenge has become a distant memory to Professor T. Bird and the Battletoads...

However, when a mysterious energy beam from outer space renders Earth's military might powerless, and a city-sized spaceship called the Colossus smashes out of the moon, the Professor knows it has to be the Dark Queen trying her latest galaxy-dominating plan.
He's right, of course, but what he doesn't realize is that the shady lady's taking no chances this time, and she's cunningly teamed up with the equally shady Shadow Boss! This means that the Battletoads will not only have to fight the Queen and her sidekicks, General Slaughter, Big Blag and Robo-Manus - but Abobo and Roper, the Shadow Boss's minions, as well!

So, that's how it stands, 'toads: the Dark Queen's got herself some serious back-up and now she's comin' to take over you Earth - what're ya gonna do about it?
First of all, you're gonna get the sides EVEN! Those terrific twins, Billy and Jimmy Lee, otherwise known as the Double Dragons, are just rarin' to get in on the action, 'specially since the Shadow boss is their archest of enemies!

Use one of the Battletoads or one of the Double Dragons to save the world from evil. The Battletoads and the Double Dragons make a great team. I especially liked the graphics on this game. They were well rendered and I love their use of color. This was one of the first games I played that contained the lead characters from two different game series. Double Dragon used to be one of my favorite NES games as a kid, and so was Battletoads. It was a great idea to put them together in the same game. If you like arcade style brawlers, play this one!

After picking up the Dragons in the Battlecopter, it's time to play space-cadets and intercept the mighty Colossus. Now's the time to get MAD n' BAD, as you begin your epic quest to save Earth from the bad guys. it's not gonna be easy, team-- the Colossus is a BIG ship and there's bound to be a whole ton of trouble waiting within its neutron shields. And with trouble, comes questions: will the team-up between the 'toads and the dragons be tight enough to defeat the dark hordes? And if so, will the Dark Queen and the Shadow Boss hang around long enough for you to settle the score?

Battletoads and Double Dragon team up in this game to defeat evil. This game was good enough that it needed to be put out on SNES and Genesis. I like this version better. The only major differences were the enemies and the graphics for the background. This game seemed to be much easier to play. The bosses are the same, but the sprites are mostly easier to beat than their SNES counterparts. Give this game a try if you like arcade style beat-em-up games.

Battletoads in Battlemaniacs (Super Nintendo)
At a converted fortress, Gyachung-La, high in the Tibetan mountains, the Psicone Corporation is testing its latest invention - the T.R.I.P.S. 21, an acronym for Total Reality Integrated Player System.

T.R.I.P.S. 21 allows a person to actually enter the Gamescape through a unique, computer-generated portal; anyone passing into the portal will have his or her atoms integrated into the Gamescape by a complicated process of quantum-mechanical osmosis.

Present at the test are Mrs. Yuriko Tashoku, President of the Psicone Corporation, her daughter Michiko, Professor T. Bird, and the 'toadally awesome trio, Zitz, Rash and Pimple, otherwise known as the BATTLETOADS.

The portal is switched on and the Gamescape is revealed: a rolling plain with four figures barely visible in the distance. Gradually, the figures get closer and are seen to be four Psyko Pigs mounted on horseback - the Pigs of the Apocalypse.

Suddenly, the Pigs gallop straight at the portal, bursting through it and into the test room. One of them grabs Michiko Tashoku and leaps back through the portal. When Zitz tries to stop them, he is clubbed senseless and draped over a saddle. Before anyone else can do anything, the Pigs of the Apocalypse are galloping away into the Gamescape with their two captives - and to make matters worse, the Gamescape begins to leak through the portal into our world!

A prerecorded message flashes up on the Gamescape screen, confirming Professor T. Bird's suspicion that the evil genius, Silas Volkmire, and his malevolent partner, the Dark Queen, are behind the kidnapping and the Gamescape leakage, and it is soon revealed that he is correct: Silas has hooked himself up to a Gamescape Generator somewhere beyond the portal, with the wicked intention of transforming the entire world into his very own Gamescape Kingdom, over which he and the Dark Queen will rule. Meanwhile, Michiko and Zitz are being conveyed to his dreaded lair, the Dark Tower, where they will be destined for doom if anyone tries to stop him.

Classic side-scroller, just like the previous Battletoads games. As always, great graphics and sound make for a super fun brawler.

Taking off where the last game left off, the Dark Queen has made her return and she kidnapped your best friend and the best looking girl of your dreams. It's up to you and your teammates, Rash, Zitz and Pimple (it's a wonder how they come up with these names) to defeat the Dark Queen and save your best friend and girl.

The third installment in the Battletoads series, this one is definitely a keeper. The graphics are very smooth looking and big so they're distinguishable. The sounds and music are nice, the themes in the levels pretty catchy. I think, for some people, you'd want to play this again and again as it can be challenging.
